The 2006 Weblog Awards Finalists Announced

Below are the finalists for The 2006 Weblog Awards. Voting begins Thursday evening. Finalist badges are available now and voting is scheduled to begin Thursday.

[Note: In order to get this information out as fast as possible we've not done all the formating that will go along with the listings that will be included with the polls. Each poll will have hyperlinks for all of the finalists sites as well as RSS (or Atom) feed links (where available) for each of the finalists. We also hope to have OPML links for each the finalist slates as well.]

Finalist Will Be Announced Tonight

We're putting the finishing touches on the slate of finalists right now. They'll be ready this evening.

Note: The comment section will be closed starting this evening. The Weblog Awards forums will remain open throughout the voting.

A Note To Nominees

Every year this is the hardest post I have to write - the one where I explain why your nominated blog was not selected as a finalist. First, the odds are heavily stacked against you. This year we received nearly 4,500 nominations in 45 categories, of which no more than 450 will be selected as finalists.

Second, it's worth restating the guiding principles of of The Weblog Awards; ones we've used since the inception of The Weblog Awards in 2003:

1) Open and public nominations
2) Categories that allow blogs of similar readership levels to compete
3) Real time vote totals
4) Quick turnaround of the results
5) Fun

An operation of this magnitude will never be without its share of controversy or problems. There's one part of The Weblog Awards that will never get any easier - the finalist cut down. Explaining why many nominated blogs are not finalists is always the trickiest part of The Weblog Awards.

To maximize participation there will be as little overlap in the selection of finalists in the categories as possible. There are two notable exceptions to this edict [Note: It's a guideline, not an iron-clad rule], the Best Blog and Best Podcast categories. Finalists in those two categories my appear as finalists in other categories. Even with that general guideline there will be several thousands of nominated blogs that for one reason or another will not be finalists in any category.

There will be more written about the finalist selection process later, but in advance please understand that the constraints of the number of categories and the maximum number of finalists per category really ties our hands. The goal is to get the most representative slate of 10 finalists per category. We're under no illusion that (even with unlimited time) we could prune each category to a list of the 10 blogs that everyone would agree were the absolute best 10 blogs that category has to offer. We do what we can under incredible deadlines to pick the best slate possible. In the process I'm sure many excellent blogs are overlooked...

If your blog was nominated, but is not selected as a finalist I want you to know how much I appreciate your participation in this years awards. With several thousand blogs nominated this kind of disappointment is an unfortunate consequence of the success of The Weblog Awards - one which will repeat every year. The prospect of anonymous and closed nomination, while it might lessen the disappointment of those not selected as finalists, is to my mind far less appealing than the open nomination process of The Weblog Awards.

I wish it could be another way, but unfortunately it cannot...

Nominations Closed - Almost

Nominations for The 2006 Weblog Awards are now closed. Please continue to check the awards homepage for news and updates. Voting will begin the first week of December.

Nomination for the following categories remains open through the weekend due to a low number of nominees.

Best Campaign Blog
Best Business Blog
Best Middle Eastern or Africa Blog

Please get to those three categories and fill them up with nominees. Thanks!

Update: All categories are now closed.

Nominations Update

Nominations are going very well - we've got over 3,000 nominations and there's still a week left to nominate blogs.

On a more serious note... A couple of sites have been entered in the junk file (their existing nominations remain) because their supporters were using the nomination post comment sections to hold running conversations. We've got a specially designated area to "smack talk" or debate who should be nominated for what - The Weblog Awards Forums. While we welcome their nominations, repetitively entering nominations for the same site just makes the finalist selection process harder.

Supporters of those sites - you'll figure out who you are when your comments aren't published - are free to carry on their conversations in the forums.

Thanks!

PS - Don't forget to spread the word about the nominations process!

The 2006 Weblog Awards - Nominations Open

Nominations for The 2006 Weblog Awards are now open. The Weblog Awards is the world's largest blog competition, with over 1 million votes cast in the last three years for nearly 1,000 blogs.

The master list of nomination posts can be found here, or you can use this entry to navigate to the nomination posts for the 46 categories.

The big change for 2006 is the addition of several new categories and the reduction in the number of finalists. Most categories will have only 10 finalists, as opposed to the 15 selected in 2005.

A couple of notes:

  • You can nominate yourself; don't be shy.
  • The number of nominations a blog receives is irrelevant. One nomination is enough...
  • In some cases the list of finalists may contain sites not publically nominated.
  • This contest is about fun - find some new blogs to read by following the links.

Nominations FAQ

Nominations Frequently Asked Questions

Q:How do I nominate a blog for The 2006 Weblog Awards?

A: Leave a comment in the associated nomination post with the blog name and URL.

Q:How do I leave a comment?

A: The best way to comment is to sign in via SixApart's Typekey service. That allows us to protect against spammers and automated comment bots. Comments from non-Typekey accounts will be accepted, but could be moderated - delaying their appearance.

Q:I don't want to use Typekey, isn't there another option?

A: You can leave a comment without a Typekey login, though it may take up to a day for your comment to appear.

Q:Will Typekey be required for voting?

A: No.

Q: How will finalist be picked?

A: To understand how 15 finalists in each category will be picked you first have to understand how they were nominated. Since you're reading this you're probably aware of the call for nominations for all of the award categories. In 2005 there were about 3000 nominations for the various categories, and we expect more this year.

For the most part if a site is not nominated it wont be considered as a finalist in a category. For everyone who will complain that we "missed" one site or another, our question to you is, "did you nominate them?" We don't have ESP here at The Weblog Awards, though it a oft requested feature.

Q: I nominated XXX, but don't see them as a finalist. Why is XXX not included?

A: Several thousand blogs will be nominated. Of the hundreds nominated in each category there's at most 10 to 15 up for voting. Many, many excellent blogs are not going to be finalists, so prepare yourself for disappointment.

You are, of course, free to disagree with the finalists we choose, but denigrating the sites selected will not be tolerated. Calling such and such site "shitty", "lame", etc. is a pretty cruel thing to do, especially since many of the sites nominated didn't even know they would be included. If you don't like the choices available don't participate.

Q: No offense, but some of the nominations in Best XXX suck. Those are not the best XXX... YYY and XXX are much better.

A: See the previous entry. Offense taken. Throwing backhanded insults at nominees or finalists is not a good way to enter the discussion....

Q: I'm a finalist and I don't want to participate. Can you remove me from the poll?

A: No. Due to the complexities of the poll creation process it will be a one time only process. Additions and deletions to the list of finalists will not be made. If you don't want your weblog to be linked to you can block or redirect incoming traffic...
